Boston 12MWe Biomass Project

Boston 1 & 2 Project Description

Technology

Boston project 1 will occupy c. 3.2 acres (including internal roadways) of an 82 acre commercial site, on which will be a 12MWe biomass Gasifier coupled with a small ACT (Accelerated Carbonation Technology) plant, fueled by waste wood and sewage sludge (8,400 operating hours).

Boston project 2 will occupy an adjoining 6 acre plot on the same 82 acre site, on which will be housed a 12MWe Gasifier coupled with a small ACT plant, operating 8,400 hours producing 10.5MWe exportable power, fueled by RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) including some plastics, supplied by Mick George Ltd.

Gasification is a process that converts carbonaceous materials, such as biomass, into carbon monoxide and hydrogen by reacting the raw material at high temperatures with a controlled amount of oxygen and/or steam. The resulting gas mixture is called synthesis gas or syngas and is itself a fuel (not dissimilar to natural gas in its use). Gasification is a very efficient method for extracting energy from many different types of organic materials, and also has applications as a clean waste disposal technique.

ACT, Accelerated Carbonation Technology, is a small blending unit similar to a portable cement mixer situated next to the final emission stack, the gasifier's resultant carbon ash/char is transferred into the ACT unit along with a small amount of the EfW exhaust where within minutes the CO2 reacts with the carbon, so converting the ash/char into a secondary aggregate or engineering fill. The reduced CO2 exhaust leaving the ACT unit is returned to the stack.

The Waste Streams diverted from Landfill

Boston Project 1

  • 86,768 tonnes per annum of contaminated wood waste diverted from landfill.
  • 19,918 tonnes per annum of sewage sludge @ 30%mc (delivered 24% solids).

Boston Project 2

  • 100,000 tonnes per annum of RDF diverted from landfill.
  • 10,000 tonnes per annum of sewage sludge @ 30%mc (delivered 24% solids).

The Boston Projects Produce

Boston Project 1

  • 88,200MWe/hrs per annum of green electricity.
  • 176,400 ROCs per annum.
  • 2,856 tonnes of secondary aggregate.

Boston Project 2

  • 88,200MWe/hrs per annum of green electricity.
  • 141,120 ROCs per annum.
  • 3,802 tonnes of secondary aggregate.
